Notable Date In History –Civil War

July 1, 1863Morning: Advance units of the Army Of Northern Virginia, Robert E. Lee’s Confederate forces, and the Army of The Potomac, Gen. Mead’s Union forces, collided at the small shoe manufacturing town Of Gettysburg, Pa.   Evening: As day ended after fierce fighting, Union forces had been driven out of the town and had occupied the cemetery and several heights on the outskirts of town. (The entire epic battle lasted three days, and resulted in a retreat to Virginia by Lee’s army on July 4, 1863.)

Rotary Last Week

Our own Jack Emmer gave a most interesting bio on Paul Harris, the clubs founder, and also on the Rotary foundation. Rotarians are encouraged to seek world peace and understanding through various means, which include student exchange programs and a worldwide effort to eradicate polio. “Service Above Self” are three words most important to Rotarians. A film

titled “Outbreak of Polio in Nigeria was presented, which placed emphasis on the speaker’s excellent program. (See Jack if you wish to become a sustaining member.)

Kate Squicciarini and Mike Herman were inducted into the club and received their pins. Bob Wilson sponsored Kate, and Brian Andreichuk, Mike.
