The West Point Highland Falls Rotary Club, in
partnership with AmeriCares and the Rotary
Foundation, ships of over $250,000 medical supplies via a sea container
this week to the Bugando Medical Center in Tanzania.
The West
Point Highland Falls Rotary Club took the leadership role in raising the
$10,000 required for logistics and transportation costs of shipping $250,000
medical supplies to the Bugando Medical Center in
Tanzania. The medical supplies were provided by AmeriCares,
a nonprofit 501 (c) 3 organization, based in Connecticut has been shipping
sea containers of donated medical supplies to Bugando
Medical Center since the mid-1990s. The Bugando
Medical Center is an 800-bed teaching hospital staffed by doctors from
Tanzania, the United States and Europe. The local population suffers from
many of the devastating effects of poverty and illiteracy, and depends on
the hospital as its primary, often only, source of medical care. Some of
the specialized departments in the hospital include Internal Medicine,
General Surgery, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Ophthalmology, and Orthopedics.
Past medical donations sent by AmeriCares
donations were vital in the treatment of Rwandan refugees in the Mwanza area, as well as the victims of the disastrous
1997 ferry accident on Lake Victoria.
The
current shipment of medical supplies will serve over 8 million people in
the Lake Victoria region. AmeriCares personnel
recruit the donated supplies from Pharmacuetical
and Medical Surgical companies and supervise the transportation of the
containers to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and
process the customs documents. The container is then put on a truck for
delivery up country to the shores of Lake Victoria in Mwanza.
The sponsored shipment should arrive to the coast in early June, then take another month to arrive at the hospital in
July 2002. West PointHighland Falls Rotary's
sister club in this project is the Rotary Club of Mwanza,. They will oversee the shipment and use this event to
promote Rotary International's service to the health and welfare of its
country.
