Notable August 19th In History

1812 – “Old Ironsides earns its name.”

On this date the U.S. Navy Frigate Constitution defeated the British Frigate Guemyre,  in a furious engagement off the coast of Nova Scotia. Witnesses claimed that the British

shot merely bounced off the Constitution’s sides, as if the ship were made out of iron rather than wood.

Rotary Last Week, August 12th

Rosanne Ruggerio, President of the Monroe/Woodbury club, gave a presentation on “The Teen Mission.” It is a program directed at the plight of  8th graders who have

“No one to talk to”.  It was predicated by the tragic events in Columbine High School. The program is designed to inter-relate with the kids to determine their problems,

and just to give them someone to talk to, re: drugs, alcohol, etc. Rosann sent flyers to local officials, businesses etc. to enlist their support. The program is funded through

donations and grants. United Way is a contributor.

Pres Roy Spells announced that the board meeting will occur on Wednesday, Aug.18 at 4:30 pm at the H.F. Library.
